You’re BEST FRIENDS.  Sisters forever.  You’ve bought the half-heart necklace that you each wear proudly around your neck; she’s best and you’re friend.

What does it really mean to be Best Friends Forever (BFFs)?  How can your friendship weather the mean girl, jealous girl, and playground gossip storms?

Being besties is more than just words spoken and jewelry exchanged. Some unspoken rules go along with it.  Without these key components, you may be good friends but not really best friends.

Here’s just some of what having a BFF means:

A Trusted Confidante

With the title of best friends bestowed upon each other, you become each other’s greatest confidante.  That means you can trust each other with your deepest secrets, without worrying about spillage. You can tell your bestie the juicy secrets that bring a smile to your face and share those that truly make you cringe.  When your bestie tells you a secret, your lips are sealed and stay that way. Because, if you can’t trust your best friend, who can you trust?

True Blue

Best Friends are NOT back stabbers. They support each other yet let each other’s true feelings be known. So if  you share sensitive information with your best friend, she will NEVER use it against you. She won’t use it to make you feel small, to make herself feel better, or to get on someone else’s good side. If you ask her whether your new haircut is really you or if you could use a breath mint, expect her honesty. You want this! After all, you’d rather your bestie inform you of that leftover garlic smell instead of letting your cute neighbor notice it.

The Beauty of Acceptance

Being best friends should provide a judgment-free zone.  A mistake was made–hey, no one is perfect! But best friends come to each other’s rescue without saying a word or raising an eyebrow…that sort of stuff is left to the parents to take care of! That embarrassing thing you did last week? Your bestie helps you fix it and forget it. If someone brings it up five years from now, it will be you, not her. Can’t fix it? Your best friend is there to tell you it’s not such a big deal after all.

No Need to Pretend

When you and your best friend are together, you can always be yourself. No pretending to be something or someone you aren’t. You’re not perfect, and your best friend knows it. But she loves you anyway. Your flaws? They just make her love you even more–well mostly. Okay, sometimes you might annoy each other–just like real sisters, but that passes quickly and never affects how much you care.

Good Times

The great thing about having a BFF is spending time with each other.  Whether it’s going to the mall or hanging out listening to music, you always have a fantastic time just being together. From facials and late-night gab sessions to double-dates and lazy afternoons, your bestie is top of the list of people you want to hang with. Hey, even standing in long lines can be bearable if your bestie is right there with you.

In Joy and Sorrow

Having a BFF also means tears and laughter–both yours and hers. Life is full of highs and lows, but your bestie makes them easier to handle. Need a shoulder to cry on or someone to prop you up when you’re ready to fall? Your best friend is there for you. And when the good times are on? Your bestie is there to share your laughter and your joy. What would you ever do without her?
